preferred battery technology
for a 6.6 MWh project
recommended for grant funding in the US
Barona Community LDES Project to deliver improved resiliency
and sustainability with 6.6 MWh flow battery system
Redflow Limited (ASX: RFX), a global leader in clean energy storage, is pleased to announce that its zinc-bromine battery technology was identified as the preferred energy storage technology for a new project that has been recommended by the California Energy Commission (CEC) for grant negotiation.
The Barona Band of Mission Indians’ project is focused on energy storage for resilience and has been recommended for a CEC award. Grant terms are currently being negotiated and finalised, with the aim of beginning development activities for its energy project by the second half of this year and anticipated deployment in 2025. The Barona Band worked with Prosper Sustainably and Microgrid Initiatives to prepare the proposal, in collaboration with Redflow Limited and Ameresco, a leading cleantech integrator and renewable energy asset developer, owner, and operator.
The project was the first-ranked submission from a field of twelve proposals following a competitive solicitation and is one of three projects that has now been recommended for funding after assessment by the CEC. The AUD $20.1 million Barona project was recommended for a grant of AUD $13.8 million by the CEC. Redflow expects its revenue on a $/kWh basis for this project would be roughly consistent with similar projects being delivered in the U.S.
Pursuant to CEC’s standard process following the proposal stage[1], grant terms will now be negotiated and finalised, with the aim of beginning development activities for this energy project by the second half of CY 2024 and anticipated deployment in CY 2025 – 26.
The project, to be funded by the CEC’s Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC) program, will support the Barona Band of Mission Indians to deliver reliable, resilient, and sustainable clean energy to their community, as well as economic development opportunities for the Tribe.
Redflow CEO and Managing Director Tim Harris said that this project further demonstrates Redflow’s technology capabilities at a commercial multi-megawatt hour scale, and will deliver greater resiliency and grid-infrastructure benefits for the Barona Band of Mission Indians. The solution would also provide a lifetime of energy cost savings that could not be achieved using competing battery energy storage system (BESS) technologies with an equivalent nameplate capacity.
“Subject to completion of the grant award process, this would be Redflow’s fourth multimegawatt hour project in California involving the CEC as a funding partner, and would again demonstrate that Redflow’s LDES technology is flexible to operate, allowing 100% depth of discharge without impairing BESS capacity or lifespan, and achieving MWh-scale battery hibernation for resilient clean energy operations, aligned with California’s decarbonisation goals”, Mr Harris said.
Barona Tribal Council Chairman Raymond Welch said: “The Barona Community LDES Project will accelerate the Barona Band’s progress toward greater energy resiliency and sustainability, and will help the Band to achieve greater energy sovereignty through control over our own energy resources.”

[1] Funding is contingent upon the approval of the project at a publicly noticed CEC business meeting and execution of a grant agreement. If the CEC is unable to timely negotiate and execute a funding agreement with an applicant, the commission, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to cancel or otherwise modify the pending award, and award the funds to another applicant. In addition, the CEC reserves the right to: 1) add to, remove, or shift funding between the different groups if there are insufficient passing proposals in one group; and 2) negotiate with successful applicants to modify the project scope, schedule, or level of funding.
