Redflow joins International Zinc Association to drive initiative promoting zinc battery benefits
Redflow Limited today announces that it has joined the International Zinc Association (IZA) to contribute to a global initiative promoting the benefits of zinc-based energy storage.
The International Zinc Association is a Group whose members represent 60 per cent of worldwide production of zinc and 80 per cent of production in the Western Hemisphere. In addition, it has more than 150 affiliate members from key zinc-consuming end-user groups.
Launched in October 2020, the IZA’s Zinc Battery Initiative aims to promote the substantial progress made by zinc batteries during the past decade by championing their substantial advantages over competing chemistries such as lithium-ion and lead-acid, especially in the high-demand area of long-duration energy storage that is the focus of Redflow, given the natural strength of its battery technology.
IZA activities include awareness and education to ensure the market recognises and understands the value of zinc batteries as well as research into end-of-life recycling to demonstrate the sustainability and superior environmental footprint of zinc.
Redflow designs and manufactures the world’s smallest zinc-bromine flow battery, with customers in areas from residential and agriculture to commercial & industrial and telecommunications. With more than 130 active deployments globally, Redflow flow batteries can scale from single-battery deployments to multi megawatt-hour (MWh) grid-scale implementations, like the 2 MWh solution recently announced for Anaergia’s Rialto Bioenergy Facility (RBF) in California.
Redflow Managing Director and CEO Tim Harris said joining the International Zinc Association and its Zinc Battery Initiative would benefit the company’s current focus on developing the market for zinc-bromine flow batteries in North America and other core markets. “Collectively, we have an incredibly compelling story to tell about the performance and sustainability benefits of Redflow’s zinc-based batteries, so we are excited to join the IZA and its Zinc Battery Initiative,” he said.
IZA Consultant for the Zinc Battery Initiative Morgan Frederick said the organisation welcomed Redflow as an important partner in promoting the benefits of zinc batteries. “We are delighted that Redflow, one of the world’s leading zinc-based energy storage companies, has joined the IZA,” he said. “The fact that zinc has a very high theoretical energy provides enormous opportunities for zinc-based battery companies to play a key role in our future energy ecosystem. We look forward to working closely with the Redflow team to help develop and capture these markets.”

Redflow Limited, a publicly listed Australian company (ASX: RFX), produces zinc-bromine flow batteries that tolerate daily hard work in harsh conditions. Redflow batteries are designed for deep cycling, long-duration stationary energy storage applications in the commercial & industrial, and telecommunications sectors and are scalable from a single battery installation through to grid-scale deployments. Redflow batteries are sold, installed, and maintained by an international network of energy system integrators. Redflow’s smart, self-protecting batteries offer unique advantages, including secure remote management, 100 per cent daily depth of discharge, tolerance of high ambient temperatures, a simple recycling path, no propensity for thermal runaway, and sustained energy delivery throughout their operating life.
The International Zinc Association (IZA) aims to develop the market for zinc batteries. Zinc batteries have made impressive progress in the past decade and offer substantial advantages over competing chemistries. Yet, zinc products continue to be overshadowed by Li-ion and lead-acid batteries and have not achieved recognition to match the progress made in product development. IZA’s zinc battery initiative seeks to address this situation and support the industry’s overall market growth.
