Redflow batteries to store renewable energy for new children’s centres in Melbourne’s east

Redflow is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement to supply 32 of its zinc-bromine flow batteries for two new state-of-the-art children’s centres in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

The Knox Children and Family Centres at Wantirna South (due to open in January 2019) and Bayswater (due to open in March 2019) will each include 100 kilowatts of photovoltaic solar panels and 16 Redflow ZBM2 batteries, storing as much as 160 kilowatt-hours of energy.  Renewable energy with Redflow storage is expected to generate annual energy cost savings of $140,000 for each site.

The advantages of Redflow’s zinc-bromine flow batteries include:

  • The ability to discharge 100 per cent of their stored energy daily without damaging the battery
  • Sustained energy storage capacity for 10 years
  • Tolerance of warm temperatures, and
  • Inherent safety with a non-flammable electrolyte.

Darling Building beats energy shortfall with Redflow batteries

Redflow’s ZBM2 zinc-bromine flow batteries have solved the problem of insufficient energy supply that was holding back a $4 million renovation of a heritage-listed building in central Adelaide.

After architectural firm Williams Burton Leopardi bought the derelict 1916 Darling Building, largely neglected since the 1960s, they learned that the planned peak energy demand for the renovated building would require more electricity than the local power grid could supply. The peak power draw during summer was calculated at 290 amps – whereas SA Power Networks could initially supply only 150 amps, although this was later revised upwards to 200 amps.

Williams Burton Leopardi director David Burton said many solutions were so expensive they would have made the renovated building commercially unviable. “We didn’t have the space in the building for a transformer; gas would cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars and ‘winging it’ was not an option,” he said. South African factory beats power cuts with Redflow batteries

South Africa’s largest manufacturer of printed circuits has beaten frequent power outages and cut its energy costs by deploying Australian-designed Redflow zinc-bromine flow batteries.

Unreliable mains power supplies meant Johannesburg-based Bosco Printed Circuits often had its production line stopped in mid-shift by power cuts, which could occur as often as twice a week. These stoppages each cost as much as 10,000 rand (A$1000) in wasted materials as well as disrupting Bosco’s tight delivery schedule to its many customers in the mining, security and industrial electronics sectors.

Bosco solved these power cut problems by installing 14 ZBM2 zinc-bromine flow batteries, from Brisbane-based Redflow Limited, which now keep its production line running through power cuts. Continue reading “South African factory beats power cuts with Redflow batteries”
